Decorative Flake Flooring with Flake Finish – Seamless, Safe & Waterproof

The flake decorative epoxy flooring system is based on an epoxy base coat system and coloured flakes and revathane as a topcoat.

It is suitable for both exterior and interior use applications in both residential and light commercial areas.

flake properties include:

  • Waterproofing.
  • Slip resistant surface.
  • Highly durable, low maintenance.
  • Wide range of colour effects.

Preparation

To prepare an existing floor for a Terraflake upgrade, we mechanically grind the surface to remove all previous coatings and contaminants, ensuring the concrete is clean and has a defined profile (CSP 2-3). Since Terraflake is a decorative coating, achieving a relatively smooth, defect-free substrate is highly important, as deep surface imperfections will be visible through the finished thin flake system.

The primer serves as the indispensable adhesive bridge between the concrete and the resin system. It is critical for controlling the porosity of the concrete slab. Proper priming prevents “outgassing”—the formation of air bubbles that rise from the concrete during the base coat application—which would inevitably compromise the final seamless aesthetic of the Terraflake finish.

We strictly control the environmental conditions, monitoring both the ambient air temperature and humidity. We may use dew point calculations to prevent condensation which can interfere with the resin cure. Most importantly, we conduct mandatory moisture testing (MVER/RH) on the concrete slab itself to confirm it is dry enough for the installation, thereby preventing adhesion failures.

Application & Specification

While Terraflake shares the high-level benefits of durability, seamlessness, and hygiene, the primary differentiation lies in the aesthetic offering. Terraflake may feature a distinct selection of colour blends, specific acrylic flake sizes, or a proprietary resin chemistry tailored for certain applications (e.g., enhanced UV stability). We consult with the client to select the flake system that best achieves their specific design vision.

Terraflake is highly versatile and equally suited to both sectors. It performs excellently in residential garages and wet areas due to its seamless protection. Commercially, its combination of strength, hygiene, and attractive design makes it an ideal specification for high-traffic areas such as clinics, staff amenities, schools, and retail environments.

We achieve an even, uniform aesthetic by applying the coloured acrylic flakes through a careful broadcast method into the wet base coat. Our experienced applicators utilize specific techniques, often “broadcasting to refusal,” to ensure the desired density is achieved and that the underlying coloured resin is completely hidden, before we apply and seal the system with durable clear topcoats.

Yes. Terraflake utilizes high-performance resins to create a continuous, non-porous, and completely seamless surface. This seamless integrity is the basis of its superior hygienic qualities, making it easy to clean and inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi, which is an essential requirement for any public or food-safe environment.

Maintenance

The acrylic flakes are highly durable. Furthermore, the entire system is sealed beneath a thick, clear, protective topcoat, which is typically a UV-stable polyurethane. This protective layer shields the colours from both physical abrasion and UV-induced degradation, ensuring the aesthetic vibrancy of the floor lasts for many years.

Maintenance is relatively low-effort. Routine cleaning involves simple sweeping and damp mopping using pH-neutral cleansers. The fine texture provided by the fully encapsulated flakes is highly effective at camouflaging minor dirt and scuffs, meaning the floor generally requires less frequent deep cleaning than a solid-colour surface.

While Terraflake is highly durable, excessive point loads can still place stress on the underlying concrete. We recommend distributing the weight of heavy retail fixtures or display units using protective pads. If the client anticipates areas of extremely heavy point loading, we advise specifying a thicker, more rigid base resin layer during application to better distribute concentrated stress across the concrete slab.
